I have a new 2003 Passat GLS 1.8T with a manual transmission. It has a problem shifting into 1st & 2nd gear when it is cold. It is very difficult to shift into 2nd. It will eventually go into gear if a lot of force is applied. This is severe when the car is cold and the weather is cold. Speaking of common transmission problems in a vehicle, like broken gears and bands, fluids of a poor quality, and so on, automatic transmission problems in cold weather is very common. This condition is also called transmission slipping. It's caused only when the vehicle is surrounded with an ice-cold weather. my f 250 will not shift out of second gear, when going down hill truck speeds up from 2nd gear and engin does not have restriction from trany. As truck costs I try to excelerate and the tack just reves up. Pulled over to cycle gears and the truck will not go into reverse. Extremley cold. The synchros on the transmission match the free-wheeling gear (which is at the speed of the previous shift point) to the next gear. When the fluid is cold, it is thicker and has more drag and slows the synchro down. If after reverse put it in neutral and release the clutch, a clanging noise is heard, which can be felt in the clutch pedal, then shifts into 1st and go forward with no problem.
